New Life on Death Row
We see two opposite responses to Jesus from the two thieves who were crucified next to Him: One blasphemed, the other believed (Luke 23:39-42 ). We rejoice over the conversion of the one and Christ's words to him: "To day shalt thou be with Me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43 ). Now, as then, Jesus saves those who truly repent—even at "the eleventh hour."
It was Sunday morning. A father sat in his easy chair reading the Sunday newspaper. Then he said to his boy, "Put down that funny paper. Get ready for Sunday school." "Daddy, aren't you going with me?" "No, I'm not going with you, but I want to hurry up and get ready." "Daddy, did you go to Sunday school when you were a little boy like me?" Thomas Boston, a young minister and fly fisherman from Scotland, wrote this in his diary in 1699: Reading in secret, my heart was touched with Matthew 4:19 , 'Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.' My soul cried out for the accomplishing of that to me, and I was very desirous to know how I might follow Christ, so as to be a fisher of men."
