Vance Havner grew up in the hills of North Carolina in the early twentieth century. Licensed to preach at the age of twelve and ordained at fifteen, this "backwoods" Baptist preacher spent but life calling people to true repentance. Boldly proclaiming the Word of God for seventy-three years, Havner came to be loved and known for hit exacting style and ingenious wordplay. In the passage below, he draws pointed parallels between the people of God during Elijah's times — the Mt. Carmel confrontation (1 Kings 18:30-39 ) — and the Church of his times. Complete Submission There is a reoccurring principle concerning this Christian life. It is the law of humility. In James 4:6-7 God's Word says " ...God rsisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble, Submit yourselves therefore to God..". God will not work with those who throne themselves. In fact, He turns from the proud not toward them. God must be first, not your job, not your family, and not your substance. Whoever or whatever influences your life the most is your true god. Before you will have true personal revival you will have to tear down secondary kings in your life. In doing so, you must also bow your wants, dreams, and feelings to the authority of the True Living God.
